Sophie Shevardnadze was born into a famous diplomatic family, as granddaughter of the last foreign minister of the Soviet Union, and later president of Georgia, Eduard Shevardnadze. As a child she saw history in the making as her grandfather played a key role in the end of the Cold War, and has had a passion for international affairs ever since.
Growing up between Tbilisi, Paris and New York, she went into journalism after receiving an MA from New York University and has spent eight years working for Russia's English-language news network Russia Today, during which time she has interviewed many of the most important people in the world, including dozens of presidents and foreign ministers.
She also has a radio show on Echo of Moscow, one of the last remaining independent media resources in Russia with an independent editorial line.
