Joachim Krause



Joachim Krause is professor for International Relations at the Christian-Albrechts-University at Kiel (Germany) since October 2001. He also is Director of the Institute for Security Policy at the University of Kiel (ISUK) and member of the Scientific Council of the Research Institute of the German Council on Foreign Relations (DGAP). During the Academic year 2002/2003 he was Steven Muller Chair of German Studies at the Bologna Center of the Paul-H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies of Johns Hopkins University. He is member of the IISS-Council since 1999. Pol with Distinction in 1975) and received his doctorate (Distinction) in 1982 from the Free University in Berlin. He got the venia legendi (Habilitation) from Bonn University in 1997. From 1978 until 1990 he was researcher and from 1990 until 1993 Director of Studies of the Research Institute of the Stiftung Wissenschaft und Politik in Ebenhausen near Munich. From October 1993 until September 2001 he was Deputy Director of the Research Institute of the German Society for Foreign Affairs (Deutsche Gesellschaft für Auswärtige Politik) in Bonn and later in Berlin. In 1986/87 he was Resident Fellow at the Institute for East-West-Security Studies in New York. He was member of the German delegation to the Conference on Disarmament in 1988 and 1989 and consultant to UNSCOM in 1991. In 1998 and 1999 he was member of the Tokyo Forum for Nuclear Non-Proliferation and Disarmament, He has served as a consultant to the German Ministry of Defence, the Foreign Ministry and the Ministry of Economic Cooperation as well as for the German Parliament. He frequently appears in German and foreign TV-Channels, Radio-stations and Newspapers and holds seminars and lectures in many countries of the world. He has created and conducted an International Summer School on European Foreign Policy between 1997 and 2001; together with Kurt Spillmann and Andreas Wenger from the Centre for Security Studies and Conflict Research at the ETH Zuerich he has conducted New Faces Conferences for young scholars in strategic studies since 1997 in Bonn, Berlin, Hamburg and Puidoux-Chexbres near Lausanne. He speaks German and English.
