DEXTER FILKINS is a reporter on the Metropolitan staff of the New York Times, which he joined in October 2000. Prior to that, he was for three years the New Delhi bureau chief for the Los Angeles Times, responsible for the South Asian region. During his time in the subcontinent, Mr. Filkins covered the nuclear tests by India and Pakistan in 1998, the death of Mother Teresa, the fighting in the Kargil region in 1999 and the civil wars in Sri Lanka and Afghanistan. Prior to joining the Los Angeles Times in 1995, Mr. Filkins worked as a reporter for the Miami Herald for eight years. He has an M. Phil. in International Relations from Oxford University and a B.A. in political science from the University of Florida.
