My recollections of this auspicious occasion 60 years ago are directly linked to the personality of the Quaid-e-Azam (“Father of the Nation”) Muhammad Ali Jinnah as I was on his personal staff as a Commandant of the Governor General’s Bodyguard.

These impressions were deep and produced an impact on me.

The question has often been asked: what principal traits constitute the personality of a great man?

I believe that the main feature is the greatness of the idea he represents.

Mr. Jinnah embodied in his person the idea of Pakistan.

From the heart of that idea, there radiated a thousand invisible lines of force, which produced a lasting impact on the Muslims of India.

Not only did this prove to be an inspiration, but the dynamism of Mr. Jinnah’s personality enabled him to overcome almost single handedly the obstacles that he had to face at every step.

They found resonance in the hearts and minds of all those Muslims that would eventually comprise the population of Pakistan.
