Iran's Nuclear Predicament

On 4 February 2006, at the end of a three-day Special Session of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), which had been called for by Germany, France and Britain (the socalled EU Trio), its Board of Directors voted to “report” Iran to the UN Security Council. Accordingly, the copy of a special report which Dr. Mohammed ElBaradei, the Director-General, will present to the Board at the agency’s regular meeting on March 6, will also be forwarded to the UN Security Council. Expectedly, the Council will initially only “debate” Iran’s nuclear dossier, may censure Iran, but will avoid imposing sanctions on the country. Russians and Chinese are not yet ready for sanctions, which will particularly harm their vast economic interests in Iran (AIC UPDATE No. 39).
