Foot in the past, eye on the future

Wiley Cawthra traveled to Eastern Europe and found a home.

Sitting at a picnic table in downtown Columbia, Wiley Cawthra introduced a young acquaintance, Valon.

“He will be rich, rich and dead, or dead by the time he’s 30,” Cawthra said slowly and without emotion.

Valon wasn’t there to hear his introduction; he was thousands of miles away. He is part owner of a bar Cawthra visits in Kosovo, in a town not far from Camp Bondsteel, where Cawthra, 58, lives and works.
