CNN Interview with Dr. Hubertus Hoffmann, President of Worldsecuritynetwork.com, on Pentagon’s Decision to exclude France, Germany and Russia from Reconstruction in Iraq
10-Dec-03
New York, December 10, 2003. In an exclusive interview with CNN International, Dr. Hubertus Hoffmann, the Founder and President of the Worldsecuritynetwork.com, argued that “America’s success in Iraq is also in Europe’s interests. NATO should contribute peacekeeping forces under a UN mandate, so that more U.S. soldiers can go home.”
The recently unveiled Pentagon guidelines from Deputy Secretary of Defense Paul Wolfowitz to limit its Iraq’s reconstruction contracts of $18.6 billion to coalition partners only, excluding nations such as Germany, France, Russia and Canada, is “not well thought out and counter-productive to the success of the post-war reconstruction of Iraq and the plan to have NATO involved in Iraq like its successful mission in Afghanistan under the command of a German general.”
Dr. Hoffmann asserted that this decision should be “revised in order to offer chances and venues to major EU and NATO countries to participate in establishing a stable and democratic Iraq.”
“We now have to look forward to NATO and transatlantic cooperation after the war disputes,” Dr. Hoffmann claimed.
Iraq will need over $100 billion to rebuild completely over the next few years. Therefore, the $18.6 billion U.S. package is just a small portion of what would be required. Major support can and should be provided by Europe and U.S. allies “who could not be asked to help and be punished at the same time,” Dr. Hoffmann concluded.
