Mark Cabana was born 1979 outside of San Francisco , California , and is a current graduate student at the Johns Hopkins Nanjing University Center for Chinese and American Studies (HNC) in Nanjing , China . At the HNC he studies international economics and international relations from Chinese professors conducted solely in Mandarin Chinese. After graduating from the HNC, he will continue his graduate study at Johns Hopkins University' s School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) in Washington DC . He will concentrate in China Studies (Prof. David Lampton) and International Economics. Cabana holds a "cum laude" degree in Political Science and Asian Studies from Furman University in Greenville , South Carolina . After graduating from Furman, he served as a Peace Corps volunteer in Gansu , China and also spent time at the National Endowment for Democracy and Peace Corps Headquarters, both located in Washington DC . His major fields of expertise are U.S.-China relations, Chinese economic and political reform, and East / Southeast Asian economic development
